Evaluation of Foley

For our Foley task we had to create all the sound for a silent clip from Akira. Overall I feel as if our production turned out really good, the clip with our Foley sounds fit well.

First off we by watching the video that we had to produce sound for then making a list of all the sounds that we thought that we needed and then began brainstorming ideas for what we could use for what sounds and wrote them down

We started off by getting the bike sound from a friend’s motorbike, we then duplicated this sound to give the impression there’s multiple bikes there, this worked well but the motorbike sounds got a bit repetitive throughout the clip, we could have got a better range of motorbike sounds and the spread them out so it didn’t sound repetitive.

Next we needed a sound for a head butt, for this we decided to get a bunch of sticks and snap them, however once we put this sound into final cut pro it was very lackluster so we decided to look for pre recorded sounds for head butts and use one of them, we found the sound for the head butt off Dexter and put this in and found it worked very well.

Next we decided to get sounds for the electricity and the grunting noise, we decided that we would try using our voices to make the sound and see how it would turn out. The voice made sounds for electricity and the grunt surprisingly turned out really well so all we had to do was time it up to the clip. However the voice made sounds were too quiet and drowned out by the motorbike sounds so we had to make the motorbike sounds quieter when the other sounds were playing.

The sounds we needed next were the explosions and body hits, first we tried testing throwing a full bag off stairs to try get the thud/explosion sound, after listening to this it was too quiet and wasn’t impactful enough for a big explosion. Instead we decided to go on soundtrack pro and look at the Foley files to try find a pre recorded one, we found both an explosion sound and a body hit sound that we could use for someone falling off their motorbike, both these sounds worked for the scene perfectly.

Overall I would of liked to use more of my own sounds in the production in order to get a better idea of how Foley artists work, I think that our own sounds that we tried but didn’t use didn’t work because of our lack of planning and testing more sounds to see how they would sound. However overall I feel as if our piece
